The private servers are limited because the persons that create the server have to program it themselves...usually without help. Practically everything that happens within a MMORPG is carried out by the server. Due to this reason, the official WoW source code cannot be reached.
Blizzard, the creators of WoW, do not support them as they think it wrong to play on services like this. They do not support it and it is possible that they will ban your account if you are found playing on one.
By playing on a private server, you have the capability of playing the game with thousands of players. This used to be limited to around 100 people at the same time, but with an Antrix core some servers can hold over 2000. To play on a WoW Private Server you must first download the WoW client. It can be downloaded by the following websites:
If it is not the Burning Crusade server you want to play then you can skip this step. In the next step you need to download and install the Burning Crusade expansion. It can be downloaded from the following websites:
After doing what is listed above, the you will need to patch until the version the server you want to play is. Example: if you want to play on a version that is version 2.0.10, then you need to patch up to this version.
Finally, open the file: realmlist.wtf, in your client folder. It will show a line similar to this: set realmlist worldofwarcraft.logon.us
Change this address to the address of the private server you wish to play on. (You have to be provided with an address for the private server to be able to connect to one). Have fun playing on WoW Private Servers!
